arts ad·min·is·tra·tor

My career goal is to be artistic director of a regional theatre dedicated to serving its community.

Howard Millman, the former producing artistic director of Asolo Theatre Company, once told me that to be a successful artistic director you needed to enjoy developing marketing plans and fundraising just as much as you enjoy directing a play. I have happily found that this description does indeed apply to me.

My seven years at Delaware Theatre Company served as a real life graduate training in arts administration. During my time there I developed long-range plans, wrote grants, cultivated relationships with board members, collaborated on marketing plans, helped with season planning, and delivered the "arts pitch" at development events. I found tremendous satisfaction and excitement in each of those tasks.

As a director, I enjoy laying the groundwork for an audience's experience with a production. As an administrator, I take a similar pleasure in laying the groundwork for a theatre's relationship to its community.

In addition to my arts administration resume, you will also find writing samples from my work in various positions.
